Katrina crime in Houston
polimom's worried about Houston's spike in crime, which, according to Nicole Gelinas writing for the City Journal, is being caused by gangmember Katrina evacuees from New Orleans:
At least 35 percent of Houston’s December increase in homicides — five of 14 over last year’s level — directly stemmed from the presence of Katrina evacuees.
I hope the Houston PD gets its shit together fast, before those friggin' crackheads who once made New Orleans the murder capital, do the same to Houston.
Meanwhile, a slice of the racist, NIMBY New Orleans crowd was happy to see all those blacks from the Superdome and Convention Center getting bused to Houston. Some assholes are driving around with one of the most despicable bumper stickers I've seen in a long time (and they're inevitably driving big-ass SUV's):

Yup. Polimom is indeed worried. And man oh man, bumper stickers like that one outta help the situation right out!
What a flippin mess.
Dude,
I've seen the same thing, and I'm not sure they're saying "Thanks for taking our gang members." I started seeing them weeks ago, before all the crime hype, and I've been taking them at face value.
The fact that they're all on SUVs leads me to believe that they belong to lawyer-types, many of whom temporarily relocated to Houston.
Am I naive on this? I understand your interpretation (there's plenty enough ugliness out there), but I really took these stickers to be genuine gratitude.
Ya, I've seen a boatload of them around town as well and percieved them to be legitimate thanks, not in the way you are suggesting. But you never know . . .
Ya know - I bet mr clio and seymour d.fair are exactly right!
Given current sentiments over thissaway, it sure would be easy for some ticked off Texans to take that bumper sticker wrong (just like I did... and I'm not even ticked off! lol...)
Thanks, y'all.
Hey guys -- you know, you could be right, but I have to say, among the rednecks I work with, the sentiment is exactly as I stated it -- i.e., "thanks for taking the niggers at the Astrodome."
I'll ask someone the next time I see a bumper sticker and ask what they mean.
It could, in fact, have an intended double meaning.
This supports my interpretation that the bumper stickers may convey a message of veiled racism:

Nah, I believe your version, I think. And, I tell you, it is really, REALLY pissing me off that everyone wants to blame New Orleans evacuees for their ills. You mentioned the crime thing, but there are dozens of other examples. Here, when the traffic got really terrible, everyone wanted to blame those New Orleans people who dry crazy for running red lights and whatnot. Bullshit, bullshit, all bullshit. Our people frustrated with red lights were running them, as many as 150+ cars a half-hour about a month ago.
CLassic case of blame the victim. Cold hearted bastards.

I'm in Gulfport, Ms. and don't know who got it worse. Us for the cane or ya'll for the evacuees. Thank the Lord this place was messed up too bad for the crowd to come our way. We put up signs saying,"u loot, we shoot" Texans need to make them saying, "No boots, we shoot"
