Charity begins at home

Thanks Nabil for visiting! This is effing incredible:

HOUSTON -- Former first lady Barbara Bush contributed money to a hurricane-relief fund on the condition that it be spent to buy educational software from her son Neil's company.

You'll probably be shocked to learn that some folks are unable to see a conflict of interest, too.

The Chronicle's Nick Anderson is currently host to some pretty funny commentary, here.

Schreoder - something bizarre happened with the link above. Trying again:

Wos -- I can't believe some of the comments in that Nick Anderson post. Seriously -- they sound like they've all been brainwashed!

Personally I think that cartoon is too kind and portrays Neil as embarrassed about the deal and concerned about New Orleans. Yet another outrage in this "gift."

What can one expect of the Ruling Elite? Nothing good, trust me.

The cartoon is spot on except for the fact that Neil is cringing: inside he's happy that he can make some more money. What would you bet on wether the software was any good?

The comments from the cartoon? (Here we go...)

We live in a polarized culture: male vs female, homo vs hetero, Demo vs Repug, black vs white... People who actually can think do not operate under these parameters.

I recently added Nick Anderson's page to my "Daily Reads" - not just because I appreciate his cartoons (I do), but also because of what you saw in the commentary there. It's often enlightening. Unfortunately, it's also very discouraging to me, since I simultaneously get to see what many of my Houston neighbors are thinking.

Sigh...
