Cynicism wins in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana loses

Will the nation remember that it was New Orleans that took the high road in this election, or will New Orleans be punished for the sins of Jefferson Parish voters?

I know this is hard for people around the nation to understand, but "we" didn't vote for Bill Jefferson, -- which is to say, we who aren't right-wing Christo-fascist paranoid listeners to partisan "conservative" talk radio -- we voted for the more rational, if somewhat unpalatable option, because we understand that having $90,000 in your freezer plays far worse in the rest of the country than saying that people escaping a flood on foot across a major bridge traversing the Mississippi River shouldn't be shot at. It's absolutely the case here that you can't understand the situation unless you're here for ... at least a few days ... at least a few months ... at least a few years ... at least a few decades ... at least a few centuries. Hell, it's a bunch of people with different agendas and cultural baggage who think they're right and everyone else is wrong -- both black and white. And the rest of us who are willing to hear both sides of the issue are absolutely screwed for being considered too soft, or too liberal, by one side, and too white, or working for "the man" by the other. This is a microcosm of every social, cultural, and political battle being waged around the country.
