WSMB 1350 AM New Orleans goes progressive

11/10/06 update:

Entercom's management in New Orleans dropped Air America Radio from it's programming yesterday. My latest remarks on the change: How corporate control kills media democracy.

Watch for the change July 25th. This is a radical and historic change for New Orleans, as much as it is a radical change for WSMB.

There's sure to be a significant protest. Be sure to let WSMB know you support the change.

This is the anticipated lineup:

5-8am Morning Sedition Mark Riley and Marc Maron, Live

8-11am Jerry Springer, Live

11am-2pm O'Franken Factor, Al Franken and Katherine Lanpher, Live

2pm-4pm Ed Schultz, Live

4pm-7pm Tom Fitzmorris, Live, Local

7pm-9pm Randi Rhodes

9pm-midnight Mike Malloy, Live

midnight-3am Majority Report, Janeane Garafalo and Sam Seder

3am-5am Mike Malloy

It's shocking that Entercom would choose to do this.

I'm elated.

I thought so too, until I looked at the current schedule. It's pretty bleak. I imagine they're trying to do something radical to pick up interest - and what better way than to try to get the attention of the overwhelming majority of liberals in New Orleans who don't now have a talk show outlet for their views.

I used to listen to WSMB all day while driving around town. NOT ANYMORE. I think that I would rather be set on fire than listen to this new line-up. When you loose your last listener and revert back to your former programmimg please advertise on a station that people will be listening to so that I can be aware of the changes. Sincerely, Former loyal listener!!!

You think your ratings were poor before. What you've done with your
as you call it "progressive" lineup will lose your loyal listeners( of which I was one ) and gain you nothing.Liberal talk radio in America is a failure and you picked it up just in time to go down the toilet bowl with it.

Hallelujah! It's so wonderful to be able to drive home for lunch and not be hearing the self-righteous, sanctimonious voice of Dr. Laura spreading her poison throughout the airwaves.

So nice to hear voices on the radio finally spreading the truth about the crooks who are in power in DC.

WSMB, you've lost some listeners and will gain many many more. I and progressives like me are spreading the word throughout the city.

"Hatred of Air America"? Huh? Do you eat Oxycontin for breakfast too?

Hey gang, if you want to hear hatred, just move on down the dial to 870 AM where you can hear all your favorite self-promoting, multi-millionaire personalities spitting their Oxycontin-laced bile and venom over the airwaves on behalf of corporate tax-dodging chickenhawks who make their millions off of the public trough, asking taxpayers to foot the bill for their oil-grabbing ventures in the Middle East, while letting terrorists run wild, and giving nothing back to the society that defends their way of life.

When you start thinking for yourselves, then come back and listen to progressive radio, where thoughtful expression and a civil exchange of ideas are the virtues that make America stronger.

This is great. Now we have a station (WSMB) that spews hate filled rehetoric thoughout airwaves of New Orleans. What a joke. Which is more dangerous--progressive radio or the murderous streets of the city? Oh, I forgot, Al Franken only threatened to Kill Bush. He hasn't really killed anyone yet has he. None of it makes any difference. You have lost me as a listener and I don't care that the station doesn't care.

From Woketman: I used to listen to O'Reilly every afternoon. Monday, I turn on your station to find some retard! What are you guys doing? Get this crap off and go back to the way it was. If it ain't broke, why did you feel you had to ruin it? WHY?

Springer,Franken,Garafalo. now how much filthier can you get that this. Your station will work in Mass. where the only drunken filth Ted Kennedy will give it a chance but down here in the south only the poor dumb mindless idiots will listhen and get brainwashed. I will never tune in again. Bring O Rilley Back DAMN IT.

The only show I "kind of" enjoy is the Jerry Springer, Live. I am surprised to see that Jerry can actually talk to people other than those who are sleeping with their sister or pregnant for their step fathers.

And I still love listing to Tom Fitzmorris. I do with that e could come on a little earlier than 4pm-7pm. I would be really cool if the show could air at least from 3pm to 6pm then I can hear more of the show before I have to leave and drive home. It's a little hard to driving and write down recipie ideas.

I do miss Clark Howard!! I 'm getting ready to but a new house and he usually has the best advise.

AND WHY NOT ADD A REALLY GOOD TECH SHOW!! That is what a lot of us do all day anyway is tap computer keys all day!!

Lilly - you're absolutely right about the tech show, and I agree that Tom Fitzmorris' show is great (even if he seems does seem to fall off that fine line between objective review and taking advertising money).

The fundamental issue is localism. WSMB, WWL, and all the other radio stations, are owned by us. Stations get a license to borrow the airwaves from us. In return, they're supposed to respond to the needs and interests of the community. I strongly believe that an important part of that obligation is providing programming that the community wants, that originates locally, and that is produced by local residents.

Good point! Thanks for bringing it up.

As for the rest of you yahoos who miss Bill O'Reilly and his ilk - his program was moved to WWL where you can still hear him screaming at his guests, lying, and telling his guests to shut up when he can't muster any intelligent rebuttal.

Oh, and by the way, only idiots have nothing more to contribute but calling someone else an idiot.
