Dedicated New Orleans firefighters fight on

As much as 80 percent of the homes that New Orleans firefighters lived in were destroyed by flood (same percentage NOPD). Although they have rescued hundreds or thousands of people from their homes, and continue to work in the city under extremely rudimentary conditions, many of them haven't been to their own homes to see the damage and salvage possessions.

Now, they have a new worry: fire.

As recently as Friday, inadequate water pressure led firefighters to use helicopters contracted by the city to drop water on two fires in eastern New Orleans. ...

Many firefighters battled fires in the same neighborhoods as their own flood-ravaged homes. ... While fighting to keep blazes from spreading to other homes, some firefighters learned from spotter planes that they had lost their own homes.

Daily, the tragedy continues to unfold.
