Cowen live chat transcript

The transcript from the Friday live chat with Tulane President Scott Cowen is now available on the Tulane Web site.

Scott Cowen will answer questions in another live chat scheduled for this coming Friday, Dec. 16 at 5 p.m. central.

Meanwhile, Inside Higher Ed, a journal of academia, has an interesting story about the recent decision by the Tulane Board of Administrators to cut a number of engineering programs from Tulane.

Last Wednesday, Bill Buckles, a Tulane University engineering professor, had an endowed chair. He had a federal grant that had been approved, but not yet delivered, for a project to study watersheds around New Orleans, and perhaps to learn how they might function during a hurricane. ...

It is not to be. On Thursday, President Scott S. Cowen unveiled Tulane’s plan for its post-Hurricane Katrina future. The plan involved cutting four of Tulane’s six engineering programs, and 230 faculty members, 65 of whom are tenured. The electrical engineering and computer science program, which houses Buckles ... was one of those eliminated.

Buckles was on my PhD committee. The most brilliant man I have ever met, bar none.

He wasn't just trying to get grant money...he solves problems.

Now, he won't get the chance...at least, not at Tulane.
